“D’you ever get sell-by dates on tippets?” I asked.
“No,” she replied, “but they can be fragile after a while. Same with lines: don’t ever leave them hanging up in sunlight.”
“Sure,” I smiled knowingly and walked off.
I’ve had four coils of line hanging by my shed window all summer. Any sunlight going between 4pm and dusk, they’ve been lappin’ it up.
If you hear a loud ‘ping’ next time you’re fishing, it’s probably me.

Much as he'd like the credit for this play on the famous last words in A River Runs Through It, the real hero is Hannah Nordhaus, who coined the phrase in an article on her first try at flyfishing, for Rocky Mountain News. This blog is dedicated to her. The good bits, anyway.
